Eat The Apple, But Keep The Doctor Close! (Part 2)

Well, here is the second part that I had promised you all! Hope you guys did read the previous part before reading this one! It is not necessary for you to read that to understand what I am writing in this, so grab your popcorn and let me discuss a few things with you.

First of all, in this age of social media madness, where all you see on the screen is the happy smiling faces of all your friends and acquaintances. Them having so much fun and while you are sitting here on your couch, just to become envious of their happiness. Or even worse, wanting to be in their shoes.

Let me just tell you, it is just a picture, a small video out of their entire life. There may be thousands of things may be going wrong, but they dare not show it to the world. The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence. Remember, you need to stop comparing their lives to yours and spoiling your mental health. It can cause grave damage to your lifestyle.

After all, it is but natural for us to use social media as a means of connection to the world, yes I get that, but you need to detoxify yourself in certain intervals. Cleanse your brain of all the envy, toxicity which is thrown around there. Then when you are sure you're ready for the next batch of social media madness, re-toxify yourself, there is no harm in that. But the cycle must keep going.

Here is a list of a few of the mental illnesses that have been seen around the globe.

In the above-displayed pie chart is the classification of the number of people all over the world who are facing different kinds of mental illnesses. I am guessing you do not know half of the diseases show, but neither did I before writing this blog. So, use your Google, but minimally, to get a gist of what these illnesses are. Brief yourself up rather than staying in the dark, because, it is not the 19th Century anymore.

As you can see, 52% of the population either is mentally healthy or is undergoing symptoms that have still not been researched on briefly. It is disappointing how mental health is taken for so much granted in this world.

Yes, today I am trying to give you a short briefing about mental health. One of the most underestimated illnesses in the world. People are so unaware of these diseases, not to mention their unwillingness to learn about them, that they blame the person for being irresponsible, undisciplined and I don’t even want to mention what other things are said about them.

Does it depend on your will power for you to catch a cold? Or get cancer? No. Then why do you think mental diseases are caused due to lack of will power of the people? There is no such thing, sorry to disappoint you. Rather the causes of these illnesses are of a huge variety and naturally, there are A LOT of people suffering from them. For a slight preview, here let me show this chart to you:

Now, if I say mental illnesses, people will start thinking about mental disorders and mind you, there is a huge difference. According to the American Heritage Stedman's Medical Dictionary, mental disorders are “truly the disorders of the brain (and not simply the mind)” whereas mental illnesses are strictly the disease of the mind. The difference between "mental disorder" and "mental illness," then is one of considering the origin of the condition.

The figures below represent estimates of the increased risk of suicide for an individual with one of the following disorders. An individual with depression, for example, is 20 times more likely to die from suicide than someone without; some with anxiety disorder around 3 times; schizophrenia around 13 times; bipolar disorder 6 times; and anorexia 8 times as likely.
DisorderPooled relative risk (95% UI)
Major depressive disorder19.9 (9.5-41.7)
Anxiety disorder2.7 (1.7-4.3)
Schizophrenia12.6 (11.0-14.5)
Bipolar disorder5.7 (2.6-12.4)
Anorexia nervosa7.6 (2.2-25.6)
Alcohol dependence9.8 (9.0-10.7)
Opioid dependence6.9 (4.5-10.5)
Psychostimultant dependence8.2 (3.9-16.9)
Only very few rare people amongst you will even have the empathy to think about what the opposite person is going through in his/ her life. They may be smiling at you, they may be behaving as normally as a normal person behaves, but only a truly empathetic person will understand how much effort that person is putting into behaving normally. Only they may be able to catch that the person is not okay.
You should try and be empathetic. Talk to people and try to understand them. I am not saying talk to every person you pass by, because that would be weird (don't blame me if you get hit). Try and have a deep conversation with a person you interact with on a daily basis. See what life is serving them on a platter. I do not know who needs to listen to this, but YOU ARE NOT THE ONLY ONE THAT MATTERS.

These conversations that you have, will give you a rough idea of how every person is in their normal ways. That will help you notice when they start behaving differently. If you notice any such thing you can just go and talk to them and maybe that is exactly what they want! A warm conversation where they feel comfortable speaking out their problems.

You do not need to be a fireman, a person gifted with supernatural powers or a doctor to save lives. You just need to be a good human who helps another one of his species survive another day. You might not realize how much of a difference that will make but venting out your problems and sharing it with someone is so relieving that it helps avoid heart attacks and suicides.

So yes, every conversation you have with someone is affecting their life so, be humble, be respectful and most importantly be empathetic. Think about how your words will affect others. Also, finding someone who you are comfortable speaking with is also very important, so it’s a win-win situation.

Also, it is very important to destigmatize your thoughts related to mental illnesses and it's treatment. There is no need to be nervous when it is for the sake of your own health. So, if you think you yourself are seeing symptoms (do not use the internet for your diagnosis), go to a doctor. No, going to a psychiatrist won't kill you, neither will he give you shock therapy. If you think someone else needs this help, talk to them, help them come to terms with their condition and get medical help.

Seeing a doctor would only improve the quality of your life. So, talk to a doctor, or a therapist who actually knows and can understand what you are going through so that they will be able to help.

Gosh! I know this is again a lot to digest but I am not done with my brain trying to vent out all the things that it wants to say to you all. I will definitely have to make another part, but I am too sure that you guys are bored with the medical overflow, so I will post it later sometime! So, suggest me topics that you would like me to write on!

Hope you all understood some new things this time too and hopefully, I did not bore you to death *throws popcorn at you to see if you are alive*. So, okay then, I will see you all on the next blog. Stay healthy, stay helpful people. Also, do not do drugs (apply Fantastic 4 The Rock style ;P)
